The Plot
It's been years since the now-familiar trainers Red, Blue, and Green began their Pokemon journey. Green wanders in search of meeting new people and challenges, Blue awaits trainers as the Viridian Gym Leader, and Red reigns as the strong and silent Champion of Kanto. Thanks to their efforts, Team Rocket was disbanded.... supposedly.
Three years later, Gold, Silver, and Kris began their journeys in Johto. Silver, the unbeknownst heir to Team Rocket, started off a little rougher than the others, having stolen his starter Pokemon instead of receiving it. But after many losses to Gold, he learned to be a better trainer. These three trainers discovered a recovering Team Rocket in their midst, lead by the higher-ups the Rocket boss Giovanni had left behind. Taking after Kanto's great trio, they vanquished what was left of Team Rocket. Gold went on to become Johto Champion, while Silver struggles with the discovery of who his father is and Kris continues her training.
But for five years, Giovanni lurked in the shadows, keeping low, refining his team, and watching what was left of his criminal empire struggle on for survival. He did not come to their aid when they called for him from the Radio Tower in Goldenrod because he knew he wasn't ready. He knew Team Rocket wasn't ready.
In the two years of Team Rocket's absence, a new team of villains has emerged. They call themselves Team Veritas and are like no other group before them. Largely composed of scientists and powerful trainers from around the world, Team Veritas wields not only advanced technology but Pokemon far from run-of-the-mill. All Team members are given a variety of Psychic-type Pokemon; they value Psychic-types as the prime example of Pokemon. They value perfection.
Team Veritas scientists are striving to engineer perfect Pokemon, of all types, and are using the malleable and powerful DNA of Mewtwo to try to achieve this. An ex-Rocket scientist who survived Team Rocket's Mew cloning experiment helped form Team Veritas with a retained hair sample from Mewtwo. However, despite the flexibility of the Mew DNA that lies within the clone DNA, Mewtwo's genes are so far proving too volatile. Pokemon introduced to the DNA become uncontrollably vicious, some with incredible Psychic powers that they end up destroying themselves with. While Team Veritas continues its research and cruel experimentation with Mewtwo's DNA, they hunt for the more stable original's - Mew's.
Their goal is to use Mew and its ideal DNA to create 'perfect' Pokemon, and use these Pokemon to wipe out all other 'imperfect' Pokemon.
Team Rocket's former leader, meanwhile, continued to watch and wait. He watched his mafia crumble into ruin and watched the rise of Team Veritas in Johto. He watched many ex-Rockets, in need of finances, flock to the new Team and help build and organize it, so that much of Team Veritas is, in fact, modeled after the infamous Team Rocket.
The idea of perfect, powerful Pokemon appeals to Giovanni, but the idea of a rival Team spreading its roots into Kanto and Johto does not. Slowly, he has pieced Team Rocket back together and has done his best to keep his plans subtle so as not to alert any of the trainers that put Team Rocket down in the past - or anyone else, for that matter. He has sent undercover agents to infiltrate and spy on Team Veritas, to observe their progress. With claws sunk into the rival Team, the Rocket boss waits for his chance to strike, to destroy their leaders and take their members and research for himself and for Team Rocket. Taking Team Veritas will undoubtedly bring Team Rocket back to its former glory, if not above and beyond.
With all manner of villainous Teams up to no good behind the scenes, will up-and-coming trainers spot the danger soon enough to stop it? Will the veterans of the Pokemon League Challenge rise to meet their newfound foes? Will Team Veritas succeed in their research before Team Rocket capsizes them, or will Team Rocket snatch victory right out from under their nose?
The Opal saga has begun. Is the Pokemon world ready?
